Natural  burial, also called green burial, is an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional burials and cremation. The body is neither cremated nor prepared with chemicals such as embalming fluids. It is simply placed in a biodegradable coffin or shroud and placed into a shallow grave where the body is returned to nature. A natural burial doesn’t put anything into the earth that doesn’t decompose.

There are 12 certified Natural Burial sites in New Zealand. These sites have been certified by Natural Burials, a not-for-profit organisation who have introduced certified natural burials to New Zealand. Natural Burials also advises local councils on how to establish natural burial cemeteries across the country.
