Eco Funerals NZ
Find a Natural Burial Cemetery in New Zealand
As well as choosing an Outside The Box Casket, you can also choose to have a natural burial with our caskets.
Natural burial, also called green burial, is an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional burials and cremation. The body is neither cremated nor prepared with chemicals such as embalming fluids. It is simply placed in a biodegradable coffin or shroud and laid to rest in a shallow grave, allowing nature to take its course. A natural burial doesn’t introduce anything into the earth that won’t decompose. It is a beautiful way to honour both the environment and your loved one.
If a full natural burial isn’t what you’re looking for, there are still many ways to create meaningful eco funerals that reflect your values and care for the planet. Eco funerals can include sustainable touches such as using digital invitations, locally sourced catering, or asking guests to donate to environmental charities instead of bringing flowers. Thoughtful choices like avoiding wasteful practices, such as balloon releases, can help reduce the environmental footprint of a funeral service.
There are 12 certified Natural Burial sites in New Zealand. These sites have been certified by Natural Burials, a not-for-profit organisation who have introduced certified natural burials to New Zealand. Natural Burials not only certifies these special sites but also works with councils across the country to expand access to eco funerals and sustainable burial options. These peaceful, natural spaces allow families to honour their loved ones while helping preserve the environment.
Every farewell can be a reflection of a life well lived. Whether you choose a full natural burial or incorporate smaller eco-friendly elements, eco funerals offer a thoughtful and meaningful way to care for the planet while saying goodbye to those you love.
