Choosing a casket is something most of us have never had to do before. You're often making this decision in the hardest days of your life, under time pressure, and without much guidance. So here's a straightforward guide to help you feel a bit more confident about it.

What are your options in NZ?

Most people are offered timber or MDF caskets through their funeral home. These are the traditional choice and there's nothing wrong with them. But there are now other options that many families don't know about until they ask. Wicker, cardboard, and even fabric wrapped caskets are all available, and some of them offer something timber simply can't: the ability to make it personal.

Cremation or burial?

This matters when it comes to choosing materials. Most caskets work for both, but it's worth confirming with your funeral director. Our cardboard caskets are certified for cremation and natural burial across New Zealand.

Does the material really matter?

For a lot of families, yes. More people are thinking about what goes into the ground or into the cremator. And yes, ours are cardboard caskets, but not all cardboard caskets are the same. Ours are made from a specially engineered board, designed specifically for strength, sustainability and a dignified farewell. No plastic, no metal, no MDF. Fully biodegradable with a much lighter environmental footprint than a traditional timber casket.

What about how it looks?

This is where things have changed a lot. A casket doesn't have to be dark, heavy or ornate. Our printed and custom cardboard caskets have vibrant lids featuring everything from native New Zealand landscapes to photo collages of your loved one's life. Families often tell us the casket became the centrepiece of the service.

What will it cost?

Cardboard caskets are generally more affordable than traditional timber caskets, but pricing varies depending on the design you choose and the funeral home you're working with. Your funeral director will be able to give you exact pricing for your situation.

What should I actually do next?

Talk to your funeral director and ask what your options are. If they don't currently stock our caskets, they can order them in. If you want to start exploring designs before you even make that call, our casket range is all on the website.
